>> whether it's a real video the threat is real and that's what's the president is talking about. that's what the president is focused on is dealing with those real threats. and those are real no matter how you look at it. >> the woman who posted the tweets is 31-year-old jayda fransen the leader of the group britain first. she has been arrested twice since last year accused of harassment of muslims and was convicted of abusing a woman wearing a hijab. these tweets come as the president attempts to push tax cuts through congress and when north korea tested a powerful ballistic missile. this brings us closer to war. ellison barber reports. reporter: good evening. republican senators on capitol hill are getting closer to a vote on tax reform. a couple of hours ago they voted in moving in favor of
5:01 pm
debate on the bill so there will probably be a vote on the senate tax reform plan by friday. whether it will pass is up in the airport the spread making a big push for it. >> not enough for the middle class to keep getting by. we want them to start getting way ahead. >> reporter: today in missouri, the president urging lawmakers to vote in favor of the republicans' tax reform bill. the senate is expected to vote on their version by the end of the week despite hesitancy from some republicans. democrat are warning the president he will need their help to pass it. >> they have this unique ability to, um, lock us out of the room and then cry that we're not at the table. >> reporter: all this as north korea remains a headache for the administration. the president promising more sanctions after the regime seemingly tested a new kind of intercontinental ballistic missile. >> it went higher, frankly, than any previous shots they
5:02 pm
have taken. >> reporter: unsettling figures from what north korea is calling a successful launch. the missile went some 2800 miles high and traveled nearly 600 miles. that could put most of the u.s. mainland within striking distance and could mean north koreans are further along in developing their technology than previously thought. >> we either have to decide that we are going to use military force to destroy this nuclear weapons program or we better be prepared to live with north korea with a capability to drop nuclear weapons on any american city. >> reporter: president trump says he spoke with the chinese president earlier today. he tweeted that he told the president the situation will be handled. that's what we heard him tell cameras yesterday at the white house, as well. >> ellison barber in washington, dc tonight, thank you. shock across the nation this morning as we learned that "today" show host matt
5:03 pm
lauer was abruptly fired late last night over allegations of sexual misconduct after more than 20 years at nbc. the alleged victim is a colleague at the network. she told executives on monday about inappropriate sexual behavior that reportedly began at the 2014 sochi olympics. nbc news president andrew lack said this was the first complaint against lauer. but lack also said in a memo that there was reason to believe it was not an isolated incident. . >> we are devastated. >> matt lauer was a fixture of the franchise, a face of nbc news. >> tonight, variety is reporting at least three women are making sexual harassment allegations now against lauer. they did not want to be identified but told variety they complained about lauer to the network for years but were ignored. matt lauer who is married with three children has had no public comment so far. also today, lock-time radio host garrison keillor says he has been fired by
5:04 pm
minnesota public radio over accusations of improper behavior. the creator of a prairie home companion says the incident involved putting his hand on a woman's bareback in an effort to console her. keillor says he apologized at the time and said they remained friends. keillor also said at age 75, he has no interest in arguing about this. joining us is our political expert. it seems like every day we are seeing accusations against some prominent figure and we have seen some of those members in congress are among those accused. are we going to see more members of congress and the state legislature accused in the coming days? >> reporter: yeah, what we'll see over the next couple of days and weeks is more members both in congress and in sacramento being accused of such behavior and this is a challenge for leaders. leaders like nancy pelosi in relation to john conyers of michigan. leaders like speaker anthony rendon in sacramento. because the leaders are going to want to put this behind them and move forward on the
5:05 pm
midterms. it's taken democrats off message in sacramento and d.c. more members will be accused of misconduct. >> there a double standard? we saw louis ck lost his job, kevin spacey, matt lauer was fired but yet in congress, we -- >> we go to an ethics investigation. yes, there is a double standard. politics is treated differently. it shouldn't be treated differently but absolutely the voters at the voting booth are also held to account for this but it really is treated differently even though the behavior is just as important. >> let's talk about tax reform. republicans really need a win here. intense pressure for victory. senators are expected to debate up to 20 hours before taking a vote. are they making progress? >> reporter: yeah. so what you see so far is there were a few holdouts on tax reform. they were on an island. but they are really off that island so far. people like ron johnson of wisconsin or jeff flake of arizona, or even bob corker of tennessee, they have all come around and so as a result, republicans have a push. they will be able to pass this in the senate. that will give them to go to conference or not.
5:06 pm
maybe the house votes on the same package but nonetheless, what that means is the republicans in the congress are going to get a legislative victory. that's a big victory for president trump heading into the new year. >> do you think senator susan collins of maine could be a linchpin? >> yes, her and murkowski is a holdout. rand paul has come around also. so the white house has the votes. i think that's one reason we are seeing this kind of "twitterverse" where the president has just insulted just about everyone over the last 48 to 72 hours because they believe that they have the votes and they can turn this into a victory and he is going to ride that for a while. >> let's talk about north korea. they have just test-fired their most powerful missile so far that experts say is capable of reaching pretty much anywhere the united states. president trump said don't worry, we're going to handle this. what does that mean? are we going to war? >> reporter: it doesn't look like we're going to war. we're not there yet. we have a long way to roll up
5:07 pm
into this. and really, war is the presence of failure. it's a policy failure. no one who is serious in the pentagon or national security establishment or allies, say in japan, want to see that happen. we are inching closer. we are not there. but nonetheless, this test of a very interesting new missile radically different than what we have seen and much more powerful is something of concern. it's going to challenge this white house to have a strong response that doesn't actually lead to the outbreak of hostilities. >> president trump promising new major sanctions following the latest missile test. some defense experts are saying that you could push kim jong-un too far. he could strike back. what's the biggest challenge moving forward for the trump administration? >> reporter: the biggest challenge is not to fight about this over twitter. that's the short answer. it's not to get -- not have insults lead to hostilities to have cooler heads prevail. that's where we need folks like those in china and in russia to do a better job of working on our behalf and we need to coordinate better in the region. that's something we haven't had in this go it alone white house that we need to see moving forward.

5:16 pm
growing problem with youth violence. >> i will say that this is a trend we're seeing more and more of is groups of juveniles who commit a really large number of violent crimes in a very small period of time. and it is quite alarming. >> reporter: authorities aren't sure how all the crimes are connected or whether they might be gang-related. but 11 suspects both male and female were booked into the juvenile detention center. several of them have already been released into a parent's custody. >> we have been successful in arresting many of them but as soon as we arrest them it seems there's another group that pops up the following weekend. >> authorities have identified 15 victims so far and they suspect there might be more. anyone with information on this case is asked to contact san jose police. julie? >> ann rubin in the south bay tonight. ann, thank you. a beautiful sunset again

this evening if you had a chance to see it. it was spectacular as it has been across the month. pretty warm this time of the year. we are coming up to december and we have temperatures in the 60s and 70s in parts of the south and the east. so we are in a mild pattern nationwide with more rain moving into portland and seattle but just real light stuff. nothing big and stormy and cold. and for us it's just more of the same. so tomorrow, thursday, well, like today, um, friday looks similar, too. and then things break down a little bit with some activity out in the pacific. a little valley fog showed up, and it was dense so be ready for it again tomorrow morning and it was cold. right now temperatures are -- eh, well, hayward and oakland where they were, napa three degrees warmer. out on the bay and the coast you see the bay bridge or the golden gate bridge, sorry, i used to work over at charlie brown's in emeryville when i
